A lot of people come to Telugu cinema through RRR, Baahubali, or Pushpa without knowing much about the industry. They enjoyed the film and want to find more. But the Telugu film library is enormous and overwhelming for someone who doesn’t know where to look.
This guide is specifically for non-Telugu speakers, either international viewers or Indian viewers from other language backgrounds, who want a guided entry into Telugu cinema. All films listed have subtitles or high-quality dubs available.
Start With These: The Entry Points
Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) — JioHotstar
If you haven’t seen it already, this is the correct starting point. Rajamouli’s epic fantasy tells the story of a young warrior who discovers his royal heritage. The scale is unlike anything in mainstream Indian cinema before this film. The story is accessible to anyone regardless of cultural familiarity.
Watch it in: Telugu with subtitles, or the Hindi dub (both are excellent). Avoid the Tamil dubbed version unless you’re Tamil-speaking.
Follow with: Baahubali 2 immediately. Don’t wait.
RRR (2022) — Zee5
Two Telugu revolutionaries fight against British colonial rule in 1920s India. The Naatu Naatu dance sequence won an Oscar. The film is relentless in the best possible way, it doesn’t pause or breathe. If Baahubali was the proof of concept, RRR is the full delivery on Telugu cinema’s global ambitions.
Watch it in: Telugu with subtitles is the best experience. The Hindi dub is also well-done.
This film needs no prior knowledge of Telugu cinema or Indian history. It explains everything it needs to.
Pushpa: The Rise (2021) — Amazon Prime Video
After Baahubali and RRR, this is the most internationally visible Telugu film of the last decade. A sandalwood smuggler rises through criminal hierarchies in the forests of Andhra Pradesh. Allu Arjun created one of the most distinctive screen characters in Indian cinema with Pushpa Raj.
Watch it in: Telugu with subtitles for the first watch. The Hindi dub has Allu Arjun’s voice dubbed over and is acceptable but loses something.
If you like this: Watch Pushpa 2: The Rule immediately after.
The Telugu Films That Show the Range
Jersey (2019) — ZEE5
A completely different kind of Telugu film. A middle-aged man who failed as a cricketer tries to make it on the national team to buy his son a jersey. Nani’s performance is the reason this film works. It will make you cry and you will not see it coming.
This film shows that Telugu cinema isn’t all spectacle. The writing is precise and human.
Kshanam (2016) — Sun NXT
A tight thriller about a man searching for his missing ex-girlfriend. Made for Rs. 6 crore, performs like a film made for Rs. 60 crore. Subtitles essential. If you like intelligent thrillers, this is where Telugu cinema shows you what it can do when it isn’t trying to be a blockbuster.
Sita Ramam (2022) — Amazon Prime Video
A romantic drama set in the 1960s, told through letters between an army officer and a mysterious woman. It’s the Telugu cinema equivalent of a Miramax prestige romance, thoughtful, beautifully photographed, emotionally careful. Good entry point for viewers who aren’t interested in action-heavy films.
Arjun Reddy (2017) — Amazon Prime Video
A film about a brilliant, self-destructive surgeon. Not for everyone, it’s raw and unflinching about its protagonist’s flaws. But it’s a landmark for Telugu cinema because it proved the industry could make adult character dramas without compromising on commercial viability. Vijay Deverakonda is extraordinary in it.
Note: The film has scenes of drug use, alcohol abuse, and some sexual content. It’s appropriate for adult viewers only.
Telugu Comedy Movies: For When You Want Something Light
Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya (2019) — Amazon Prime Video
A small-town Telugu detective who’s terrible at his job but refuses to admit it. Deadpan comedy, strong writing, a uniquely Telugu sense of humor that actually translates across language barriers. Naveen Polishetty is excellent.
Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020) — Netflix
Pure crowd-pleaser. A switched-at-birth story done with energy and warmth. Songs are good, comedy is light, Allu Arjun is at his most accessible. Good for viewers who want to ease into Telugu cinema without going straight to the intense films.
Watching Tips for Non-Telugu Speakers
Always watch with subtitles for your first time through a Telugu film. Even if you understand Telugu partially, the cultural references and wordplay require subtitles to fully appreciate.
Don’t be confused by the runtime. Telugu films are often 2.5-3 hours long. This is normal and the pacing is designed for it, there are usually natural breaks built into the story.
The interval break is real. Most Telugu films have a planned 10-15 minute interval (intermission) around the halfway point. The streaming versions maintain this, some even have an on-screen ‘Interval’ card. Don’t think the streaming platform is glitching.
Songs are part of the story. Telugu films integrate songs differently than Western musicals. They’re not usually diegetic (the characters don’t usually burst into song in the middle of a conversation). Songs are emotional interludes that comment on or celebrate a moment. Skipping them, especially on a first watch, means missing part of the emotional experience. So, That’s all about the Best Telugu Movies for Non-Telugu Speakers.
